I was given this charming set of four pebble-shaped drinks coasters yesterday. Originally bought from Woolworths, these ceramic mats are heat resistant to 100ºC, are stain resistant and easy to clean. I will have to make four cups of tea in order to make best use of them. Or have three guests. Or four guests if I refrain from tea.

Pebble of Britain!

Museum librarian Maggie Tran and I took a walk to the Hollingbury hill fort in north Brighton on Christmas day and made a geological transect in a nearby wooded copse. Here we found many flint nodes pushed up through the ground by fallen trees. Pictures is a complete one with a hole in the top - nicknamed "The Brighton Volcano". As I was demonstrating knapping to Maggie on another node it split in two to reveal a shape suggestive of the British mainland, which I have now made into the BPM logo.

I still haven't made it to Chesil Beach, but I took a random trip to Lyme Regis. 10 minutes on the beach yielded these fine specimens. I like the patterns on the top two, but the best is the Jurrasic coral/plant fossil fragment.

I was digging a hole at my parent's house trying to find a sewer pipe, when I noticed this rock had ribs, like a rib-cage. Dad, who's a geologist says it's 170 million year old or so. We decided it is a bi-valve, similar to scallops and mussles.

Let's Make Our Own Museum @ The Whitstable Biennale

The Museum headed down to Whitstable to join in the satellite programme of the Biennale with "Let's Make Our Own Museum". We were joined by Vida, Georgia, Gracie, Jo & Alex, who decorated boxes and filled them with artefacts from the beach.

After we finished we collected some unwanted bits and are putting together a museum box for Whitstable - something we plan to continue for every beach we visit.

The debate as to what a pebble actually is continues with this find from the banks of the Thames, beneath Waterloo bridge. Clearly rounded by the action of water and the slow grinding of river silts, this handsome hand once held a clay pipe bowl. Personally, I am uncertain, but am prepared to be flexible for something so lovely.

It made me reconsider what I was doing at the time, and within a few weeks I had moved to Brighton. I found Happy Stone on the beach soon after settling in. It perfectly reflects the transformation that had taken place for me."

After a short speech, museum director Graeme Walker cut the red ribbon and our new patrons entered the museum area, on what was an incredibly lucky, beautiful February afernoon. Librarian, Maggie Tran, read pebble related stories and artist, Sarah Bowker-Jones, delivered an excellent lecture "Re-examining the pebble skimming machine." Then there was a short skimming competition, followed by a quest to find the finest pebble on the beach. A great day out was had by all. Thank you to everyone who attended, we hope to see you again soon.

Chapter 95

THE HOTEL RESIDENCIAL Ritz was a building of white concrete straddling half a block between the navel officer's club and the beach. The management prided itself on its spotless white damask tablecloths.
The ladies' lingerie salesman from Santiago paced up and down the hall of the hotel before the curfew lifter at five. If he had gone for his walk earlier, the guards might have shot him. He came back to breakfast with his pocket full of stones. The walls of the dining-room were a hard blue. The floor was covered with blue plastic tiles, and the tablecloths floated above it like chunks of ice.
The salesman sat down, emptied his pockets and began to play with the stones, talking to them and laughing. He ordered coffee and toast from the fat, snuffle-nosed Chilote girl who worked in the kitchen. He was a big, unhealthy man. Folds of flesh stood out on the back of his neck. He wore a beige tweed suit and a hand-knitted sweater with a roll collar.
He looked in my direction and smiled, showing a set of swollen pink gums. Then he withdrew the smile , looked down and played again with the stones.
"What glorious rosy hues the clouds have this morning!"
He had broken the silence, suddenly, in a burst.
"Permit me to ask you a question, Sir? What is the cause of this phenomenon? The cold rising, I have heard it said."
"Perhaps," I said.
"I have been walking on the beach and I have gazed at the forms which the Creator has painted in the sky. I have seen the Chariot of Fire transformed into the arching neck of a swan. Beautiful! The hand of the Creator! One should either paint or photograph his work. But I am not a painter and I do not possess a camera."
The girl fetched his breakfast. He cleared a space among the stones for his cup and plate.
"Are you perhaps acquainted, Sir," he continued, "with something of la poesia mundial?"
"Some," I said.
His forehead puckered with concentration and he declaimed slow, ponderous stanzas. At the end of each he clenched his fist and set it slowly on the table. The girl had been standing with the coffee pot. She put it down, buried her face in the apron and ran laughing for the kitchen.
"What was that?"
"I don't know."
"The solitudes of Gongora," he said and began again, straining to extract the last shred of emotion from the lines, moving his hands sideways and splaying his fingers.
"A las cinco de la tarde.
Eran las cinco en punto de la tarde..."
"Lorca," I suggested.
"Federico Garcia Lorca," he whispered, as if exhausted by prayer. 'The Lament for Ignacio Sanchez Mejias'. You are my friend. I see you are not wholly ignorant of our Hispanic literature. Now what's this?"
He jerked his head back and shouted more poetry.
"I don't know."

I saw him later in the day, slump-shouldered in the drizzle, plodding the streets with his black-and-white check cap and case of lingerie samples. Models, in pink corsets and brassieres, stared from shop-windows with vacant blue plastic eyes. The underwear shops were owned by Hindus.
In the night the noise of his crepe soles kept me awake again. He went out at five, but I heard him come back several times. At breakfast I passed the kitchen door and saw the girls helpless with giggles.
He was standing among the tablecloths, his bristly face fixed in the hopeless smile. On every table and at every place was an arrangement of stones.
"These are my friend," he said in a hoarse, emotional voice. "Look! Here is a whale. Wonderful! The confirmation of God's genius. A whale with a harpoon in it its side. Here is the mouth and here is the tail."
"And this?"
"The head of a prehistoric animal. And here is a monkey."
"This?"
"Another prehistoric animal, probably a dinosaur. And this," he pointed to a pitted yellowish lump, "the head of primitive man. The eyes. You see? Here the nose. And the jaw, here. Look, even the low forehead, token of inferior intelligence."
"Yes," I said.
"And this," he picked up a round grey pebble, "this is my favourite. Turned one way, a porpoise. Upside down, the blessed Virgin Mary. Wonderful! The imprint of God upon a humble stone!"
The manager of the Ritz did not like being woken before nine. but the other clients wanted breakfast and the tables had to be cleared. In the course of the morning, I dropped some things back to my rooms. They had taken him to hospital.

Celebrating pebbles is a smooth idea

Hooray for Maggie Tran, museum librarian of the Brighton Pebble Museum (The Argus, February 11). We hear so much from people knocking Brighton and Hove. And many of them do so for good reason and try to improve the prospects and the environment for us all. But how great to see someone celebrating what makes us special. The miles of ocean bordered by a thousand million unique rocks. The pebbles of Brighton beach have many stories to tell. We should listen to them. We should understand that we cannot stay sharp by grinding against each other. We will only stay sharp by keeping our own minds focused.

In 1954 Faber & Faber published Pebbles on the Beach, by Clarence Ellis. It was the first – and remains the only – book on the subject. Which strikes me as odd, for I don’t think I’m alone in finding them compulsively collectable and curiously satisfying. What I’m trying to do now is work out why.

Like the leaves on the trees they’re ubiquitous yet rare. Every one is different, different in shape or marked in a different way. But unlike leaves they have weight and heft in the hand. They’re solid and heavy and (though this, of course, is an illusion) reassuringly permanent. They’re cool to the touch but comforting to hold. They’re free but precious, too: a favourite pebble can become a talisman, a minor household god, a Becketian worry-bead, even a smug little social mark. They’re as refined as the most delicate sculpture, yet they’re also tough as nails.

I think it’s this sculptural quality that forms the strongest part of their appeal. Reduced enough in scale to sit comfortably on a shelf in the smallest modern flat, their smooth curves and subdued colours give them a striking resemblance to miniature Barbara Hepworths or Henry Moores – which is hardly surprising, given how important pebbles were to them both.

Pebbles have paradoxes of their own. Their hardness is relative, for every pebble is a boulder being rolled, scraped and beaten towards its end as gravel and sand. Their gentle colours are, in fact, largely illusory too: when their pearly salt glaze is ground away they often reveal brilliant, far less harmonious tones. And their placid weight belies their former role as lethal weapons.

From the age of about four, dropping pebbles into rivers and streams was one of my favourite occupations. Plus ça change. I’ve just bought an old stone house overlooking the largest pebble beach in Europe. It’s a strange and compelling place, detached from the land and heaped with pebbles to a height of 50 feet, but its greatest mystery – still not satisfactorily explained – lies in the grading of its stones from east to west. Below my house, where its 12-mile length ends in a scooped-out cove, all the pebbles are bigger than a fist, but at its western end they’re the size of peas. It’s often been said that local fishermen could tell exactly where they were along its length simply by looking at the size of the pebbles on the shore.

Pebbles obsess me: like many people I love collecting them, but I wonder how recent an interest this is. Were pebbles collected for their beauty before, say, the late-19th century, or (if at all) solely for their utility? Their earliest use seems to have been far from aesthetic – think David and Goliath. Even in the historic past they’re associated with violence and death. When Mortimer Wheeler conducted his famous excavations at Maiden Castle between 1934 and 1938, one of the pits then uncovered contained thousands of pebbles from Chesil Beach, which I live above today. They, and hundreds of others nearby, had been stored as slingshot for use in a vain – and ultimately fatal – attempt to repulse the attack of the Roman Second Legion in 44BC.

Did anyone collect pebbles for pleasure then? It seems unlikely, and yet… They’ve never, to my knowledge, been found among the grave goods extracted from the ground, nor do they figure in any painting or manuscript I’ve ever come across. But one of the most pathetic objects in the British Museum is a stick from Ancient Egypt, touchingly labelled ‘child’s doll’. It’s just a foot-long splinter of wood, no more, and yet – if the experts are to be believed, it gave comfort to a playing child four thousand years ago. The transfiguring strength of childish fantasy is such that it’s possible that pebbles provided equally pleasurable playthings.

It’s a groundless speculation, of course, yet it might help explain why certain found objects such as sticks and pebbles retain a faintly magical hold over us, an echo of childhood make-believe. On the other hand, it’s rare that pebbles suggest the kind of anthropomorphic associations one might have seen as a child: now it’s their formal beauty that attracts me most. It’s a half-way house, I suppose, between the childish approach and the drier, more dispassionate approach taken by serious-minded pebblistes like Clarence Ellis.

Interestingly, it’s in the dry, scientific spirit of inquiry that pebble collecting seems to make its first documentary appearance, at some point during the early 19th (or possibly late 18th) century. Even then, however, pebbles played a subsidiary role, a mineralogical spin-off from the rise of modern geology and the study of fossils (Charles Darwin, for one, was a great pebble-collector as a boy). You won’t find pebbles, as such, in the display collections of the Natural History Museum, though some of the crystals may have been found inside them.

Ellis follows this 19th-century path in his book, concentrating almost entirely on helping the reader determine the particular mineral origins of each pebble he or she may find. From this perspective, the soft grey bloom which gives beach pebbles much of their subtle colouring (and, for me, much of their allure) is seen as a veil: Ellis suggests polishing your pebbles in a grinder or cracking them in half to reveal the real beauty beneath. I remember being taken, once, to a meeting of my mother’s WI, where one of these polishing machines was demonstrated. In, to what looked like nothing so much as a toy concrete-mixer, went the pebbles and out (eventually – I suspect we were offered the ‘some we prepared earlier’ get-out) came brilliantly coloured, gleaming gemstones. Their dazzling hues and glossy surfaces had all the appeal of glitter and gilt – superficially attractive and instantly appealing, they were like boiled sweets: aesthetic tooth-rot compared to the restrained, Shaker-style purity of raw, unprocessed pebbles on the shore.

And perhaps this is something else that appeals to us collectors: pebbles’ sameness and subtlety is something that appeals to tacit assumptions about restraint and ‘good taste’. There’s nothing brash about pebbles: they’re John Pawson not Frank Gehry, Tacita Dean not Tracey Emin, Ralph Lauren not Alexander McQueen. And I guess this is the weakness of pebble collecting too: like all careful manifestations of good taste it can be boringly, achingly dull.

But that’s not to say that pebbles haven’t been creatively inspiring: Hepworth and Moore are the obvious examples, but they were also collected by Brassai, and their suggestive, inchoate forms were much prized by the Surrealists - is that a pebble or a cloud, a boulder or a skull? They also appealed to Jim Eade, the wide-ranging curator and collector whose former home in Cambridge, Kettle’s Yard, has been called ‘the apotheosis of the pebble’. More recently, the late Derek Jarman gave them a starring role in his influential garden at Dungeness, and they’ve turned up repeatedly as motifs on everything from greetings cards to B&Q floor-tiles to coasters and Paul Smith cabinets. So what gives pebbles their enduring appeal? Maybe Isaac Newton's famous quote can give us a clue. For Newton they were, it seems, a symbol of humility, and they are humble things: modest sculpture, minor beauty, quiet allure. In a world addicted to brashness and overstatement, those are qualities to be treasured.

The Pebble Pledge

The Brighton Pebble Museum has been established to promote both a love of pebbles and the protection of the UK's coastline.

Besides pollution, one of the main causes of destruction of the coast is through erosion, some of which is man made. When large amounts of stones or sand are removed from beaches, there is no longer a natural barrier against the sea, which then hungrily devours the earth.

In Brighton, according to a byelaw, it is unlawful to remove pebbles from the beach, as this contributes to erosion. This however relates to the removal of buckets full of stone and not the occasional souvenir - because if it mean no one was allowed to take a single pebble off the beach, the police would be overwhelmed with fineable offences.

"A council spokesman said: "We realise that visitors often take a pebble or two as a souvenir and we don't have a problem with this... We haven't had any incidents of people trying to take buckets or barrow loads of pebbles from the beach... If we did, we would call the police and take action against them."

The Brighton Pebble Museum supports this law and in response to some voices of concern are proud to introduce this simple pledge: For every beautiful pebble we take from the beach, we will replace it with two ordinary ones, sourced from locations where erosion is less of a problem. The pebbles we take will then be put on display for the mutual appreciation and edification of all. The pebbles we return will, over time, become beautiful in their own right, with their own story to tell.

The Brighton Pebble Museum encourages all our patrons to follow suit and help keep our unique coastline lovely.

Postscript:
During the pre-opening event of the museum we had a lucky dip, with pebbles from my old collection as prizes. Please note that these stones have now been replaced on the beach and that the £1-2 we made from the lucky dip has been used to buy a children's book for the library entitled "On my beach, there are many pebbles".

THE WOLF AND THE SEVEN LITTLE KIDS

There was once upon a time an old goat who had seven little kids, and
loved them with all the love of a mother for her children. One day she
wanted to go into the forest and fetch some food. So she called all
seven to her and said: 'Dear children, I have to go into the forest,
be on your guard against the wolf; if he comes in, he will devour you
all--skin, hair, and everything. The wretch often disguises himself,
but you will know him at once by his rough voice and his black feet.'
The kids said: 'Dear mother, we will take good care of ourselves; you
may go away without any anxiety.' Then the old one bleated, and went
on her way with an easy mind.

It was not long before someone knocked at the house-door and called:
'Open the door, dear children; your mother is here, and has brought
something back with her for each of you.' But the little kids knew
that it was the wolf, by the rough voice. 'We will not open the door,'
cried they, 'you are not our mother. She has a soft, pleasant voice,
but your voice is rough; you are the wolf!' Then the wolf went away to
a shopkeeper and bought himself a great lump of chalk, ate this and
made his voice soft with it. Then he came back, knocked at the door of
the house, and called: 'Open the door, dear children, your mother is
here and has brought something back with her for each of you.' But the
wolf had laid his black paws against the window, and the children saw
them and cried: 'We will not open the door, our mother has not black
feet like you: you are the wolf!' Then the wolf ran to a baker and
said: 'I have hurt my feet, rub some dough over them for me.' And when
the baker had rubbed his feet over, he ran to the miller and said:
'Strew some white meal over my feet for me.' The miller thought to
himself: 'The wolf wants to deceive someone,' and refused; but the
wolf said: 'If you will not do it, I will devour you.' Then the miller
was afraid, and made his paws white for him. Truly, this is the way of
mankind.

So now the wretch went for the third time to the house-door, knocked
at it and said: 'Open the door for me, children, your dear little
mother has come home, and has brought every one of you something back
from the forest with her.' The little kids cried: 'First show us your
paws that we may know if you are our dear little mother.' Then he put
his paws in through the window and when the kids saw that they were
white, they believed that all he said was true, and opened the door.
But who should come in but the wolf! They were terrified and wanted to
hide themselves. One sprang under the table, the second into the bed,
the third into the stove, the fourth into the kitchen, the fifth into
the cupboard, the sixth under the washing-bowl, and the seventh into
the clock-case. But the wolf found them all, and used no great
ceremony; one after the other he swallowed them down his throat. The
youngest, who was in the clock-case, was the only one he did not find.
When the wolf had satisfied his appetite he took himself off, laid
himself down under a tree in the green meadow outside, and began to
sleep. Soon afterwards the old goat came home again from the forest.
Ah! what a sight she saw there! The house-door stood wide open. The
table, chairs, and benches were thrown down, the washing-bowl lay
broken to pieces, and the quilts and pillows were pulled off the bed.
She sought her children, but they were nowhere to be found. She called
them one after another by name, but no one answered. At last, when she
came to the youngest, a soft voice cried: 'Dear mother, I am in the
clock-case.' She took the kid out, and it told her that the wolf had
come and had eaten all the others. Then you may imagine how she wept
over her poor children.

At length in her grief she went out, and the youngest kid ran with
her. When they came to the meadow, there lay the wolf by the tree and
snored so loud that the branches shook. She looked at him on every
side and saw that something was moving and struggling in his gorged
belly. 'Ah, heavens,' she said, 'is it possible that my poor children
whom he has swallowed down for his supper, can be still alive?' Then
the kid had to run home and fetch scissors, and a needle and thread,
and the goat cut open the monster's stomach, and hardly had she made
one cut, than one little kid thrust its head out, and when she had cut
farther, all six sprang out one after another, and were all still
alive, and had suffered no injury whatever, for in his greediness the
monster had swallowed them down whole. What rejoicing there was! They
embraced their dear mother, and jumped like a tailor at his wedding.
The mother, however, said: 'Now go and look for some big stones, and
we will fill the wicked beast's stomach with them while he is still
asleep.' Then the seven kids dragged the stones thither with all
speed, and put as many of them into this stomach as they could get in;
and the mother sewed him up again in the greatest haste, so that he
was not aware of anything and never once stirred.

When the wolf at length had had his fill of sleep, he got on his legs,
and as the stones in his stomach made him very thirsty, he wanted to
go to a well to drink. But when he began to walk and to move about,
the stones in his stomach knocked against each other and rattled. Then
cried he:

'What rumbles and tumbles
Against my poor bones?
I thought 'twas six kids,
But it feels like big stones.'

And when he got to the well and stooped over the water to drink, the
heavy stones made him fall in, and he drowned miserably. When the
seven kids saw that, they came running to the spot and cried aloud:
'The wolf is dead! The wolf is dead!' and danced for joy round about
the well with their mother.

The music can be of any genre or style. Moreover, the more obscure and personal the better. It should, however, have a pebble related theme or content. Songs are good, as are instrumentals/sound effects/composed pieces/jams etc. Tracks should be no longer than 5 minutes. There are no limits and if we receive more tracks than will fit on a single CD, we'll have to go double!

If and when the CD is sold, we will pay contributors an equal share. Please include a name, contact and title of track - or we won't be able to use it. Depending on the speed of people's response, we may have a CD ready for the Pebble Museum's Grand Opening on February the 9th.
